Tour Guide License

A business tax receipt is required for anyone who offers to show and describe the points of interest and historical places in the city.

Requirements

Tour guides must be 18 years of age or older and must pass a one-time examination regarding, among other things, their knowledge of:

  • The history of the city
  • The history of various points of historical and general interest within the city and its vicinity
  • Names and location of streets and highways
  • Proper designations

Study Booklets

Tour Guide Study Booklets are available at the Customer Service Center, 50 Bridge Street for $12, which pays for the book and test. Tour guide exams are given on Wednesday and Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Other testing times are available by appointment only. Call 904-825-1037 to inquire.

Business Tax Receipt Cost

The business tax receipt cost for a guide is $8 and there is a $10 administrative fee. All business tax receipts expire September 30 of each year and must be renewed annually. Business tax receipts are issued in person by the Department of Finance, Budget, and Management at the Financial Services Center, 50 Bridge Street.

Tour-Based Vehicles

An additional “driver for hire” fee of $25 is required for individuals driving tour-based vehicles and horse-drawn carriages, which must be renewed each year for a $10 fee.
