During a Storm
This section covers actions to take when hurricane-force winds and severe weather are actively impacting St. Augustine.
Safe Areas: Retreat to the most protected, interior area of your house, away from windows and glass doors, even if shuttered.
Remain Indoors: Do not venture outside during the storm. Roads may be impassable, and flying debris will be extremely hazardous.
The Eye of the Hurricane: If your area experiences the calm "eye," understand that the other side of the storm will follow shortly. Continue to stay indoors. Brief, essential outdoor repairs are acceptable, but return inside quickly.
Monitor Local Media: Continuously monitor local radio, NOAA Weather Radio, or local news for emergency instructions.
Official Statements Only: Ignore rumors. Listen only to St. Johns County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.
Turn Off Utilities: Turn off interior electricity and gas if instructed or if you have concerns.
Backup Power: Use flashlights and battery-operated lanterns.
Avoid Candles: Avoid candles if possible due to fire risk. If used, never leave unattended and have a fire extinguisher ready.
Generator Safety: Operate generators only in well-ventilated outdoor areas, far from windows and doors, to prevent deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.
Emergency Calls Only: Call 911 only for life-threatening emergencies. Limit non-emergency calls to keep lines open.
Emergency Contacts: Keep a list handy (family, local authorities, services).
Communication Plan: Maintain contact with family using your pre-arranged plan.
Ensure access to necessary medications and have a stocked first aid kit readily available.
Do Not Leave Early: Remain indoors until the "all clear" notice is given by St. Johns County Emergency Management or local law enforcement.
Curfew Awareness: Be aware that a post-hurricane curfew may be imposed.
Shelter Instructions: If in a shelter, do not leave until the shelter manager deems it safe.
