Biography

Commissioner Jim Springfield came to St Johns County in 1989 from Gainesville, where he began his career as a Physical Science teacher and Director of an Outdoor Education Center.  Upon arriving in St. Augustine, Springfield owned and operated a local Italian restaurant called Pete's On Vilano, while teaching Earth and Space Science to ninth graders while serving as Chairperson of the School Advisory Committee at Nease High School. 

Commissioner Springfield continued his work for St. Johns County School District for over 21 years in the following positions:

  • Dean of Students, Allen D. Nease High School
  • Assistant Principal, R.J. Murray Middle School
  • Assistant Principal, Sebastian Middle School
  • Principal, Gamble Rogers Middle School
  • Principal, Bartram Trail High School
  • Associate Superintendent, St. Johns County School District

After retiring from the St. Johns County School District in 2011, Commissioner Springfield joined the faculty at Flagler College in 2017, creating the first Human Resources Department for Flagler College, serving as benefits coordinator and employee relations coordinator, and he served on the President’s Cabinet of the college.

Commissioner Springfield holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Valdosta State College, which he attended on full basketball scholarship.

He also received a Master of Science in School Administration from Nova Southeastern University, with an emphasis in leadership and management of schools, personnel, and school curriculum.

Commissioner Springfield is married to Patricia Woods Springfield and has one son, Jacob Springfield, who is a film maker in New Orleans, LA.
