paul waldron speaking at podium

In memory of Commissioner Paul Waldron

A message from Mayor Tracy W. Upchurch

A message from Mayor Tracy W. Upchurch: On behalf of the residents of the City of St. Augustine, I wish to offer our sincerest condolences to Commissioner Waldron’s family, especially his wife Stephanie and daughters, Ashley and Kati, and the greater community family of St. Johns County.

First and foremost, he was a loving husband and father. He cared deeply for the people he served and tirelessly advocated for enriching the lives of our residents through his leadership and commitment. We especially appreciate his invaluable service as a board member of the Tourist Development Council.

Paul served as County Commissioner since 2016 but has served our entire community long before that. His deep-rooted commitment to bettering St. Augustine is demonstrated in his involvement as a coach, mentor, and friend to many. As a life-long resident of St. Johns County, he was always looking out for its residents, his neighbors, and ways to make it a better place to live.

Being a small business owner and true servant-leader himself, Paul was dedicated to approaching any issue presented before him with a strategic mindset and always with the best interest of his community, his home, at heart.

Paul will be dearly missed.

king tides

King Tide Alert

October 26 - 29, 2022

King Tides are the highest predicted high tides of the year, and they often cause nuisance flooding in coastal and low - lying areas. More severe flooding can occur if the King Tide coincides with severe weather conditions (heavy rain, strong winds, big waves). However, sea level rise is causing these tides to happen more frequently, last longer, and extend further inland.

To remain safe during a King Tide, avoid driving through standing water. If necessary to drive through standing water, proceed slowly and with caution to avoid creating a wake. Avoid parking and leaving vehicles in areas prone to flooding. For more information, check out CityStAug Weather Stem and the City's website.

florida city government week

Florida City Government Week observed October 17-23

Celebrating importance of municipal government and the role it plays in residents’ quality of life

Since city government is the government closest to its residents, it is important to understand how the City operates, the services it provides, its contribution to a better quality of life, and the importance of their own active involvement.

This year the City promoted the week with a 'day in the life' video series on Facebook and Instagram:
@CityStAug, @CityStAugArchaeology, @CityStAugFire, @CityStAugMarina, and @StAugPD, so be sure to check it out! Florida City Government Week is sponsored by the Florida League of Cities.

Face of the City

David Birchim, Assistant City Manager

As we are wrapping up our celebration of Florida City Government Week, we want you to meet David Birchim, Assistant City Manager, as this week’s #FaceOfTheCity!

David started his career with the City 25 years ago as an Entry Level Planner. He worked his way up the chain of command through the Planning and Building Department, and served as Director for 8 years. Then, in 2021, he was promoted to Assistant City Manager. In his current role, David is responsible for special projects (like real estate development, affordable housing, building a new fire station, constructing a new sailing center for the yacht club, the Broudy project, and much more), legislative funding requests, and updating the environmental protection code / resilient shoreline initiative. During emergencies, like Hurricane Ian, David helps the Planning and Building Department conduct post-storm damage assessments downtown and in Lincolnville.

“As part of this year’s Florida Cities Week theme, ‘My City: I’m part of it, I’m proud of it”, I want to mention something about St. Augustine that I am most proud of,’ said David. “We are a premier City for historic preservation. No other City of our size has a comparable program. The Nation’s Oldest City stands out because we have the highest concentration of important historic properties in the Southeast region, and possibly the entire nation.”

Outside of work, David likes to be outside hiking, fishing, and kayaking. In addition, David is a talented artist – his mediums include watercolor and urban sketching.
