Coastal potential flooding next week

KING TIDE / NOR'EASTER ALERT

October 7 - 12, 2022

King Tides are the highest predicted high tides of the year. Severe flooding will occur with this King Tide cycle due to it coinciding with a nor'easter. Expect flooding similar to what occurred during Hurricane Dorian.

To remain safe during a King Tide, avoid driving through standing water. If necessary to drive through standing water, proceed slowly and with caution to avoid creating a wake. Avoid parking and leaving vehicles in areas prone to flooding. For more information, check out the City's website and
CityStAug Weather Stem.

City of St. Augustine hires contractor to expedite debris removal services

Debris must be separated, unobstructed in order to guarantee pickup

On Friday, October 6, 2022, the City of St. Augustine will have Debris Removal Contractor (DRC) on-site to start collecting storm materials from residential neighborhoods throughout the city in those areas most impacted by the storm based on volume and accessibility to the debris.

Debris must be separated into separate piles: yard debris, construction debris, and household goods, such as furniture and appliances. Mixed debris will not be collected.  Debris that is blocked by parked vehicles or is inaccessible also will not be collected. For the full story, visit the City's website.

Face of the City

Joe Snyder, Roll Off Driver

Joe started off with the City four years ago as a Rear Loader. He worked hard to step in wherever needed, obtained his diploma with the City’s support, and has been promoted to Roll Off Driver! It is Joe’s job to collect the ‘behind the scenes’ trash from City and residential compactors. On the weekends, he helps with the front loader and even picks up litter with a picker as needed.

“Here in Solid Waste, we work as a team to get the job done, no matter what our title is. This is so important, especially since we are short staffed now,” said Joe. “I enjoy what I do, and want to continue doing my part in saving the Earth. Helping our environment is so important to me, and if I don’t help… who will?!”

Outside of work, Joe loves spending time with his girlfriend, Correne, who is a Microbiologist at Flagler Health. He also enjoys leatherwork, especially creating and wearing Steampunk designs, as well as fishing, riding his Harley, playing video games, and cooking.

sandbag disposal

Hold onto your sandbags

Hurricane season ends November 30

Hurricane season isn't over, hold onto your sandbags, just in case they are needed again!

If they're not in a condition to be kept, proper disposal is to empty the bags before putting in trash. CityStAug Solid Waste will not pick up filled sandbags.

Any unwanted sand may be scattered in your yard. However, sandbags that came in contact with floodwaters may be contaminated with bacteria and should be discarded at the Tillman Ridge or Stratton Road transfer stations. This service is free of charge for residents. For more information, visit St. Johns County's website.

Fire Prevention Week 100th Anniversary

Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape!

Next week marks the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week! This year’s theme is “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape!”

Did you know that today’s homes burn faster than ever? You may have as little as two minutes to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe:

  • Develop an escape plan, designate a meeting spot, and practice your plan regularly.
  • Make sure your house is equipped with working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas, and on every level of the home.
  • Check your smoke alarm batteries monthly and change them twice a year. If you need smoke alarms in your home, or you need help developing a home escape plan, contact the St. Augustine Fire Department at 904.825.1098.
