Face of the CityCommunity Outreach Officer Steve FischerOfficer Fischer started with the City about 8 years ago as a Patrol Officer, and before that served with the St. Johns County Sheriffs Office. As a Community Outreach Officer, Fischer focuses on community outreach by building positive connections with our homeless population. He personally reaches out to homeless residents, discovers what the individual needs, and offers corresponding resources. These resources may include: admission to the Family Reunification Program; a referral to Flagler Health Plus- Care Connect; providing rides to and from appointments with doctors, Social Security Office, Care Connect, and job interviews; meeting basic clothing and nutritional needs; roadside counseling; first aid for minor injuries; attend and participate in court, including drug court; work with both the State and City Attorney’s Offices; collaborate with the Veterans Affairs Office; assist individuals in obtaining a PO Box; and much more. Officer Fischer also serves on the Board of Directors for Home Again St. Johns. “St. Augustine is my home and I care about the people in my community,” said Officer Fischer. “The success stories that result from assisting people who want to better their situation is what motivates me. I want to do my part to help, since I know what it’s like to be without a home, I know what it’s like to be a paycheck away from homelessness.” One of the success stories Officer Fischer is most proud of is being able to provide a homeless veteran with no family a proper burial. Check out the full story here. Outside of work, Officer Fischer loves spending time with his wife, Marianne, and kids Chase, who is in the Air Force, and Jack. He also enjoys traveling and working on cars. For more information about homelessness in St. Augustine, check out this white sheet.
