City offers workshops to residents seeking flood mitigation assistance

Open house and individual consultation will be available

The City of St. Augustine will offer several open house workshops with Quality Engineering and Surveying, LLC, a consultant hired to provide Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) counseling to residents.  The workshops will be held in The Alcazar Room of City Hall, located at 75 King Street on the following days:

  • Tuesday, August 24, 10:00am – 12:00pm
  • Tuesday, August 24, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
  • Wednesday, August 25, 1:00pm – 3:00pm

For those unable to attend a workshop in person, there will be a live stream of the workshop on Tuesday, August 24, at 10:00am, with on-demand viewing available the following day at www.CityStAugTV.com.

Following each workshop, Quality Engineering staff will be available to schedule individual appointments and site visits for Thursday and Friday, August 26 and 27, for those who attend the workshop events.  There will be a brief presentation of the FMA application process with ample time for questions and one-on-one discussions with the consultant.

In the wake of Hurricanes Matthew, Irma, and Dorian, and after several localized flood events in the fall of 2020 that were not related to a named storm event, residents pleaded with the city to offer additional assistance and support to find solutions for flood mitigation.

City staff assisted residents during the 2020 FMA application period and realized the need for subject matter experts in this process.  “We successfully submitted two properties to be reviewed by FEMA, and one was accepted,” stated Richard “Buddy” Schauland, the City’s Building Official and Floodplain Manager. “But to give our residents the best guidance, support, and assistance, it became very evident that we needed to bring on board a consultant who not only understands the intricacies of this process but also knows how best to maximize the potential financial return of these efforts for our applicants.”

Quality Engineering and Surveying, LLC was selected from ten applicants and awarded the contract by an evaluation team of City staff.

For questions in advance of the workshop, contact Kimberly Ryals, Senior Project Manager, Quality Engineering and Surveying, LLC, at 225-698-1600 or send an email to kryals@qesla.com.
