When the City of St. Augustine closed the south section of Project S.W.I.N.G (St. Augustine’s Wish for Its Next Generation) in May 2021, residents and community members rallied their support in favor of repairing and reconstructing the beloved playground to keep it in its current configuration, or at least as close as possible.  Not only did they support it through their words, but they were willing to offer financial contributions, as well.

In response to this gesture by the community, the City of St. Augustine created a webpage specifically dedicated to accepting contributions online through PayPal.  Interested donors can click the “Donate” button and make a contribution in any amount. And because PayPal charges a transaction fee, there is an option to offset that fee, if one so chooses, when completing the online transaction.

The city has agreed to an ad-hoc committee of stakeholders who were instrumental in the 1997 community-wide construction of Project S.W.I.N.G. to coordinate the fundraising effort and serve as liaison on the project with the city, led by City Commissioner John Valdes, including Mike Davis, Les Thomas, Philip McDaniel, and Troy Blevins.

As City Manager John Regan stated when the park was closed, “it’s unfortunate that we had to close this one section of the playground, but it opens the door for a new opportunity… the opportunity to rebuild this important piece of our city, and give it another 25 years of life, something for the next generation to enjoy.”

The city anticipates completing repairs and reconstruction in order to re-open the playground by fall of 2022, which will mark the 25th Anniversary of Project S.W.I.N.G.

While the southern section of the playground is under construction, every effort will be made to keep the toddler playground and swings open.
