Preservation Forum: Part 2 Design and Demolition Guidelines

Tuesday, September 28, 2021

Guest speaker opportunity: The City of St. Augustine is in the process of updating the current architectural design guidelines for historic preservation. The design guidelines are used to evaluate changes to historic buildings and new construction in historic districts, and demolitions throughout St. Augustine. This workshop will present survey results and have a deeper dialogue about the community's preferences for maintaining the city's historic character. The non-profit National Alliance of Preservation Commissions will be leading this workshop on behalf of the City of St. Augustine Historic Preservation Division. Public surveys will also be distributed separately. City staff will be available to answer questions about the currently proposed partial demolition and design review ordinance after the facilitators have completed their presentations.

The National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) has partnered with the City of St. Augustine to hold a virtual Preservation Forum: Part 2, which is a follow-up to the Design Guidelines workshop, held on September 11th. This event will feature a presentation on Public Outreach, the content of which is part of NAPC's Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP®). CAMP is led by qualified preservation professionals in support of NAPC's mission to “build strong local preservation programs through education, advocacy, and training.” The goal of CAMP is to provide high-quality, engaging and informative training to preservation-related boards and commissions of all types through presentations, hands-on exercises, group discussions, networking, and mentoring. Trainers include commissioners, local, state and national staff members, attorneys, consultants and commission partners.

The presentation will include a review of the results of the recent St. Augustine Design Guidelines Survey, which was developed and administered by NAPC CAMP Trainers, Adrienne Burke and Kate Singleton in coordination with the City of St. Augustine. City Staff will also be available to talk about current ordinance proposals regarding partial demolition and design review outside the local HP districts.
