Appointment is to fill vacancy in October
During its regular meeting on Monday, June 10, the St. Augustine City Commission confirmed an appointment by City Manager John Regan to fill the vacancy created when current Assistant City Manager Tim Burchfield retires in October.
Meredith Breidenstein, CPA, currently the city’s Director of Budget and Performance Management, was unanimously confirmed when the commission approved its consent agenda. Although the appointment is made by the city manager, because the assistant city manager may at times act in the city manager’s absence, the commission affirms the selection.
“Having the selection made this far in advance allows plenty of time for a smooth and seamless transition,” said Regan. “Meredith has clearly demonstrated she has an understanding of the broad sweep of city services and the intricate workings of municipal finance that makes those services possible. These are important characteristics for any assistant city manager.”
Breidenstein joined the city staff in 2005 as Finance, Budget and Management Deputy Director, and in 2016 became the city’s first Director of Budget and Performance Management. She is the point person for interactions with numerous state and federal agencies regarding reimbursements for disaster recovery following Hurricanes Matthew and Irma, and is involved daily with the development and management of the city’s budget and financial planning.
A native of South Carolina, Breidenstein relocated to Florida in 2003 and worked as an internal auditor with Vystar Credit Union before joining the city.
