St. Augustine Fire Department and St. Johns County Fire Rescue will train together
Starting on Friday, August 24, through Friday August 31, firefighters from the City of St. Augustine and St. Johns County Fire Rescue will conduct training drills at 6 W. Castillo Dr. and adjacent properties including the former Barnacle Bills Restaurant, Best Western Spanish Quarter, and the Welcome Center. All of the properties are owned and operated by Jalaram Hotel Group, who made the properties available for this training prior to their demolition.
The training will focus on forcible entry, search and rescue operations, firefighting operations, as well as firefighter survival training, using simulated smoke and live role-players in some evolutions. During this time there will be a number of fire and rescue units at the property, and while some training drills will be at night, every effort will be made to not disturb the neighborhood in the vicinity. It is important to note that no live fire will be used during this event.
“Opportunities like this do not come along very often,” observed St. Augustine Fire Chief Carlos Aviles. “We are prepared to maximize this training to its fullest potential to sharpen our skills in a real-world training event. The members of both departments appreciate the Jalaram Hotel Group making these properties available for our training.”
