Access from W. San Carlos to main library parking will close
As part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) widening and reconstruction improvements at the San Marco Ave. and May St. intersection, the St. Johns County Library Main Branch’s new south driveway on U.S.1 is scheduled to open Thursday, August 23, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.
As planned, access to the library and Davenport Park from W. San Carlos Ave. will close when the new driveway on U.S. 1 opens. An additional driveway to the library’s overflow parking lot is also located just north of the new driveway access on U.S. 1.
Variable message boards will be displayed on northbound and southbound U.S. 1 and W. San Carlos Ave. to provide advanced notice to motorists of the new driveway opening.
The public is asked to exercise caution through the area as motorists and pedestrians become accustomed to the new entrances.
According to FDOT, the San Marco Ave. and May St. intersection reconstruction is planned for completion in December of this year with drainage improvements on May St. expected to begin early in 2019. The final schematic drawing is available here.
San Marco Ave., W. San Carlos Ave. and May St. improvements are part of a collaboration with FDOT, the City of St. Augustine and the community to reconfigure and widen the roadway to allow for better traffic flow in the area. New pedestrian crosswalk signals and shared bicycle lanes are also included in the intersection improvements. View a satellite photo and project overview on the FDOT website.
