Visioning plan and community input paving the road ahead

FDOT San Marco Uptown Parking

City of St. Augustine officials recommended last month to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) that a combination bicycle/transit vehicle lane southbound on San Marco Ave., utilizing the area currently designated as parking spaces, be added from its intersection with State Road 16 to Hope Street, and a single bicycle lane northbound in the same area.  In the Uptown San Marco business district, free on-street parking will remain between Hope Street and W. Castillo Avenue.  Additionally, the city will pursue an improved system of side street parking and a commercial loading zone to supplement the on-street, non-meter parking.  Find additional resources in MOBILITY.

The recommendation moving forward offers the following immediate solutions for the benefit of the community:

  • Keeps on-street non-meter parking in Uptown San Marco business district;
  • Offers dedicated loading zone on Cincinnati Ave. for businesses and customers;
  • Improved accessibility to downtown neighborhoods;
  • Improved traffic sight lines, allowing for safer intersections along San Marco Ave.;
  • Signalized pedestrian crossings throughout the corridor;
  • Provides dedicated bike lanes outside of vehicle traffic and pedestrian sidewalks;
  • Increased pedestrian safety on sidewalks by removing bicycle traffic;
  • North City residents have improved access to downtown by offering dedicated bike facilities; and
  • Allows for effective satellite parking with a dedicated transit lane; therefore, improving event management.

In the long term, the recommendation ultimately allows for removing congestion and cut-through traffic with multi-modal access solutions to downtown.  A trolley/transit stop will also be added to offer convenient and enhanced access to Uptown San Marco business district.

The dedicated transit lane is a crucial step in securing future options for permanent satellite parking facilities, keeping in mind the future footprint of parking for St. Augustine will extend outside the urban core, which can be defined as west of US-1, north of San Marco Ave. at US-1, and east of the Bridge of Lions, all consistent with the city's vision for a more livable city through improved mobility systems.

The project includes portions of State Road A1A from the Bridge of Lions north to State Road 16, including Avenida Menendez, South Castillo Dr., and San Marco Ave. Set to begin during the summer of next year, the estimated $2.7 million project will include milling and resurfacing the existing roadway.
